Information from a web site describing the career of Winfield Scott Cunningham states Cunningham's group was not successful in the October 1944 escape attempt.  After another trial Cunningham and the other escapees were sent to Nanking on 19 January 1945.  While there a cell mate was NCM Connie Battles.  On 1 August 45 they were moved to Peking.  ("They" may or may not include Battles.)After 18 Aug Cunningham and "they" were moved to Fengtai.  An Army Emergency Liason Team contacted Commander Cunningham on August 23, 1945 at the Fengtai prison camp.  He returned to the states by air and arrived in Annapolis, Maryland on 18 Sep 45.
Again, Battles, Brimmer, and Stewart may or may not have done the same.  North China Marine Douglas Bunn told me Brimmer had been transferred to Mukden before Bunn was sent to Ward Road Jail in June of 45 when Kiangwan was closed down and the POWs were sent to Japan.  Bunn had a broken leg.  He himself escaped Ward Road during a bombing raid, was recaptured, sent to Nanking, and then to Fengtai where he was finally rescued.  But he says he was not rescued from Fengtai until October 45.  That date may not be accurate.
